Awning winner gives back to the community

Joanne and her family moved into what was once the Town Hall in the township of Urenui six years ago. Realising the significance of the space and desire to give back, in December of 2017 Joanne opened up the Town Hall once again to the community. Now called ’The Old Town Hall Cafe & Tearoom’, Joanne serves arguably some of the best scones, tea and clotted cream the country has seen.

Having entered our $10,000 awning giveaway in late 2018, it soon became clear that The Old Town Hall was a clear favourite. Thousands of voters in the Urenui and the wider region rallied behind the cause - possibly because the win was more about benefiting the community than an individual.

"To us the most important thing in life is community, and we are delighted to be able to bring people together and to be able to offer shade will be such an improvement, ” says Watson.

To celebrate the official unveiling of Joanne’s Luxaflex Te Rā Awning and all the work she has done in the local Urenui Community, an event was being held at the Old Town Hall.

“We are absolutely thrilled that our Luxaflex Te Rā Awning has gone to a deserving home. We hope the Old Town Hall outdoor space can now be enjoyed by the community and visitors for many years to come,’ says Lance Mitchell, Managing Director of Luxaflex NZ.

This March we were privileged to join Watson at the Town Hall Cafe as she celebrated the fantastic Urenui community who have rallied behind her, thanking them by throwing a tea party (of course) - a Mad Hatter's one that is.

It was also the perfect opportunity to reveal the new Luxaflex awning that sits proudly at the front of the cafe, providing shade for patrons and community alike.

Always putting other people first, Watson said she wanted an outside area because "I've always struggled with letting people sit outside if they are not getting the protection."

"So in a weird way again it is still influenced by just looking after people."

We want to wish Joanne and her family all the best and commend her for her fantastic efforts in Urenui.
